Spring 2012 Recording and Mixing Classes

In Spring 2012, Backthird Audio is again offering production classes through Waubonsee Community College. The series, entitled Beyond the Garage, consists of three separate classes:

In How to Make a Record, you'll learn what happens at each step of the studio recording process — pre-production, tracking, mixing, and mastering — and hear samples of a song at each step. Get a tour of the Backthird Audio studio, learn how recordings happen and then produce a simple song as a group in record time. The class meets one night only, 7pm February 9, and the entrance fee's a bargain.

In Studio Recording, you'll get a hands-on introduction to modern recording techniques. Learn how to set up your own recording system on any budget. Complete a four-hour recording session outside of class using your own equipment or arrange for studio time with the instructor at an additional fee of $140. Finish class with a multitrack recording of a song you engineered yourself. The class meets for three Thursday nights, beginning February 23.

In Studio Mixing, you'll get a hands-on introduction to music mixing techniques. Learn how instruments fit together to create a ”produced sound.” Demystify concepts like EQ, reverb, delay, and compression, and apply them on a multi-track recording you bring or one provided to you. You'll leave with a finished song you mixed yourself. The class meets for three Thursday nights, beginning March 22.

The instructor for all Beyond the Garage classes is Benjie Hughes, a musician and owner/operator of Backthird Audio in downtown Aurora, Illinois. All courses are noncredit courses offered through the College's community education program.
