Tracking one instrument at a time
This is the opposite of recording "live." We start by recording one instrument – for example, drums – and then add bass, then guitar and so on until your recording sounds like a full band. This approach takes much longer (and costs more) than recording live, but it allows you to pay more careful attention to every part and every note. It's also a good solution for bands that have trouble keeping rhythm when they play as a group, bands that can't all come to the studio on the same day, and bands that are really made of one person who plays every instrument!
