For DJ TJ MEDEL, a great wedding is like a performance – and like any performance, you only get one chance to get it right.

“I’ve always loved being the life of the party,” says TJ, who studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York as well as at Chicago’s Second City. “But at a wedding, the DJ is a stage manager first and a performer second. You have to know what’s happening behind the scenes way ahead of time, then make good decisions on the fly – because, just like in live theater, something is always bound to change.”

TJ has performed as a poet and spoken word artist in venues as diverse as Chicago’s Green Mill and New York’s Madison Square Garden. Add to that time spent in stage management and sound design, and a career as a DJ just made sense.

While he’s most personally charged up by 90s music and EDM, TJ’s favorite music at your wedding is whatever has guests out of their chairs the fastest. For him it’s not about a particular type of music – but a particular type of moment.

“What I love about DJing is the joy I get when I hear the words ‘That’s my song!’,” TJ says. “Being the catalyst of a moment that gets shared between your closest friends is an awesome thing to be in charge of. I get to press the button that starts that amazing story you’re going to tell later.”
